Cracking or leaning retaining wall? Learn how improper drainage and backfill lead to frost heave and failure—and what it takes to fix it for good.

We recently got a call from a homeowner — let’s call him Dave — who was worried about a retaining wall in his backyard. A few winters after it was installed, he noticed cracks in the top caps and a slight lean developing. On top of that, two different gutter downspouts were dumping water toward the wall, and he suspected that wasn’t helping.
As we talked it through, a few red flags popped up right away. The builder had added on to an existing wall after bringing in a bunch of black dirt to raise the yard. Behind the new section of wall there was supposed to be 3/4" rock for drainage. But when Dave pushed a driveway marker down behind the wall, he hit nothing but dirt — no rock at all. After a cold winter, the saturated soil froze, expanded, and started pushing the wall outward. Classic frost heave and drainage failure.

A retaining wall isn’t just decorative; it’s a structure that has to hold back a surprising amount of weight. When the area behind it is built the wrong way, that weight increases dramatically and unevenly.

In Dave’s case — and in many DIY or cut-corner installs — someone skipped the clean stone and used black dirt right up against the wall. That soil holds water like a sponge. When it gets saturated from rain, sprinklers, or misdirected gutters, it dramatically increases the pressure on the wall. Then, when winter hits, that wet soil freezes, expands, and literally shoves the wall outward. That’s how you end up with cracking, bulging, and leaning.
On our first visit to a property, we’ll usually walk the wall with the homeowner and look for telltale symptoms. You can do the same quick inspection yourself:
If you see a combination of these, chances are the issue isn’t just cosmetic — it’s structural, and drainage is almost always part of the problem.
Another piece of Dave’s puzzle was his gutter system. He had two different downspouts that discharged water right toward the retaining wall. Every storm, hundreds of gallons of roof runoff were racing to the base and backfill of the wall.

For Dave, we recommended underground drain lines with pop-up emitters to carry his downspout water away from the retaining wall and release it safely lower in the yard. In some cases, we’ll also add catch basins to capture surface water before it can soak into the backfill.
